Because of her age (17) and the fact that she was in state care (her mother’s an alcoholic), Miss D needed special permission to travel for an abortion. She decided to have an abortion after doctors found out that her fetus was anencephalous and would die shortly after birth.
Because abortion is illegal in Ireland, Miss D needed a court order granting her permission to travel abroad for an abortion. The High Court has now granted her that permission.
It’s a shame that this poor woman had to go through a 10-day legal process in order to have an abortion.
