In honor of International Women’s Day (March 8), I’ve put together a woman-themed mix. No playlist, this time. Sorry. As usual, you can listen online or download to an mp3 player and listen later. Sorry about the porny pics on the main page. I still can’t find a free web-hosting service where I can upload my mixes. :-(

Um . . . it appears the service I’ve been using to host my mixes has decided to get a piece of the online porn action. Please bear with me as I try to find a more family-friendly site to host my shows.

As usual, you can listen online or download and listen later.

The playlist is below. Tracks without artist name are:

Con La Mano Levanta – Macaco
Rivers of Babylon – The Melodions (off The Harder They Come soundtrack)
You Know I’m No Good – Amy Winehouse (bonus track off the Back to Black album)
Ubuzima – Kigali Boyz
Same Soup – Jungle Leaders (off the Same Soup album)
We Wan Know – K-Man (off the Bamboat album)

South African reggae star, Lucky Dube.

Last night, gunmen in South Africa fired several shots that were heard around the world as they murdered reggae star Lucky Dube in an attempt to steal his car. The 43-year-old musician had just dropped two of his children off at his brother’s house in Rosettenville, just south of Johannesburg, when he was attacked by three armed carjackers, who shot him at close range. The two children were unhurt. The attackers got away and remain at large. The killing has shaken fans in South Africa and the world over, and has drawn condolences and condemnation from South African President Thabo Mbeki and Senegalese musician Youssou N’Dour.

What a terrible blow! Like millions of Africans, I grew up with Lucky Dube’s music.  His death is a tremendous loss to Africa and to music lovers everywhere. My heart goes out to his widow and the seven children he leaves behind.

Lucky Dube, you will be remembered. Thanks for the music and the memories.

Got a brand new show for y’all’s listening pleasure.

The first segment features some Roma (Gypsy), French, and Arabic tracks. Then we move on to Disco, Reggae, and Hip-Hop: one track by Sierra Leonean rapper Problem M (rapping in Krio, a Sierra Leonean dialect) and the other by NY/DC poet/rapper/all-around-entertainer KOMplex, Mr. Keep On Moving. I met him a couple of times at open mic events in DC and he was impressive enough for me to buy his CD both times. I also put in one of my favorite tracks by the Spanish group Macaco who, for those of you who live in the DC area, will be performing at Lisner Auditorium on October 26. The last segment’s pretty much a random mix of everything I couldn’t get into the first two segments.

As usual, you can listen to the show online or download it to an mp3 player and listen later.

I’ve been a bit lazy in getting a show out since I got back from vacation.

It was Trinidad and Tobago’s independence anniversary a couple of weeks ago so the first segment of the show is all Trini music. Got some Mighty Sparrow and Lord Kitchener as well as Rikki Jai (Track 11) and the unofficial Trini national anthem (Track 07). Big up to TnT!!!!

As usual, you can listen to the show online or download it to an mp3 player and listen later.

So today, I decided to only play female musicians. It felt like male musicians have been dominating the show lately.

I recently got my hands on a couple of Les Nubians CDs, from whence comes the ”Brothers & Sisters track.” I’ve also got a couple of tracks in there by local musicians: DC’s own Princess of Controversy (“A Soldiette’s Story”) and Wayna (“Secret Identity”).

As usual, you can listen to the show online or download it to an mp3 player and listen later.
